Silly Putty U

Floating Silly Putty®

Silly Putty has a specific gravity of 1.14, meaning it's denser than water, and should sink. But even with no understanding of marine engineering, you can make Silly Putty float.

If you place Silly Putty in its plastic egg in water, it will float. If you remove the Silly Putty and roll it into a ball, it will sink. But check out what happens if you shape Silly Putty like a boat -- it stays on top of the water!

You can also make Silly Putty float like this: Half-fill a glass with water. Roll small pieces of Silly Putty into spheres. Then, add small amounts of vinegar and baking soda to the water and drop in the balls of Silly Putty. The Silly Putty will float to the top as it is surrounded by bubbles; as the bubbles fall off, the Silly Putty sinks to the bottom.
